Telescope

Galileo Galilei
Telescope, Florence, c. 1610
Glass, wood, leather; 920 x 60 mm
Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza, Florence, inv. 2428

The tube is covered in brown leather, overlaid with narrower bands of red leather. The rich gold-leaf decoration applied all over the tube and on the two lens housings makes the instrument extremely precious. Only some of the optical parts have survived: the objective is original, while the eyepiece has been replaced with a biconvex lens dating from the late 19th to early 20th century.
